Varian is a a recurring character in Tangled: The Series. He serves as the main antagonist for the second half of the first season, until his redemption in the third season.
Within the series, Varian is a young alchemist living in the kingdom of Corona and a close friend of the crown princess Rapunzel. In his latest misadventure, he ended up mad and deteriorated with a desire for revenge, following a major crisis concerning the rising Black Rocks, betraying the trust of Rapunzel and the kingdom and turning against them in retribution of his father's encasement. Upon realizing the consequences of his actions following a disastrous battle with Rapunzel, Varian made amends by restoring relations with Rapunzel and her friends, seeking to undo the damage he caused. Later on, he was among the prominent heroes who led the forces of Corona in the ultimate battle against the demon Zhan Tiri, eventually becoming Corona's chief engineer.
Varian also appears as a supporting player in the villain wars. In the second Disney Heroes vs. Villains, Varian appears as an alchemist living in the animated universe, where he assists the forces of good in the fight against the forces of evil.

Wanting to begin expanding his faction to strike back against Skeletor, Dr. Robotnik seeks a new assistant, eventually settling on two candidates: boy genius Jack Spicer, and the young alchemist Varian. Wanting to see who is more qualified, Robotnik pits the two against each other in a duel. However, one member of Robotnik’s faction isn’t too keen on the idea of being replaced…
