Vanitas is a major villain in the video game franchise, Kingdom Hearts. A dark being drawn out from the body of Ventus, Vanitas is a skilled fighter with incredible knowledge of the Keyblade. He is a major player in the villain wars, usually appearing as an apprentice of Master Xehanort.

A Change in the Character's Backstory

Formely Sora, the newly born Vanitas is brought by Pitch Black's supreme darkness to the CG realm. He has enough time to mock his once best friend, Riku, before he would make his escape to parts unknown.

Tumble & Toil

Vanitas appears during the Battle of the Ballroom, surprising Riku, who not only was part of the attack due to his affiliation to the wicked Maleficent's cause, but decides to follow him after he leaves.

Mirrors & Mistakes

Later, Riku managed to find and confront Vanitas, demanding to know what had happened to Sora. Before they could come to blows, they were interrupted by a new arrival, the One Winged Angel Sephiroth, who managed to return thanks to the death of his last remnant, Kadaj, killed by Riku during the Battle of the Ballroom. Thanks to this event that transpired, the fallen war hero was eager to stretch his legs by killing the two young wielders of darkness. Vanitas attempted to fend off Sephiroth, but the One Winged Angel swiftly blocked all of his attacks with his sword. Sephiroth then turned his attention to Riku, wounding him and causing him to scream in pain. Surprisingly, Vanitas came to Riku's defense, forcing Sephiroth back with a flurry of blasts from his Keyblade. Vanitas and Sephiroth then clashed blades, only for the older warrior to overwhelm the masked boy. Recovering from his wound, Riku called on the power of the darkness, stunning Sephiroth with a mighty torrent of dark energy. Seeing the One Winged Angel on the ropes, Vanitas joined in, and their combined onslaught managed to overwhelm Sephiroth, destroying him. Sephiroth's body dissipated into nothingness, as Riku and Vanitas enjoyed a moment of camaraderie over their shared victory.

Crown & Chaos

Following their fight with Sephiroth, Riku and Vanitas finally had the chance to talk on friendlier terms, and Riku was finally able to get answers as to Sora's fate. To Riku's surprise, Vanitas revealed that he was Sora, having been transformed by the darkness. Riku offered to help turn Sora back to normal, but Vanitas turned him down, stating that he was happy to remain as darkness. Riku was at peace with that, as long as the two of them were together.

If the war wouldn't have been cancelled, he would have possibly betrayed Hades and Maleficent alongside Master Xehanort. Later, he and Ansem (born through Master Xehanort's possession of Riku) would have faced Gene Khan Mandarin and his army and would have lost the fight.

Animated Vs Video Game Villains War

Vs Lock, Shock and Barrel

Seeing Maleficent's alliance growing a bit too big, Master Xehanort told his minion Vanitas to take some of them out. He quickly went after the newly revived Oogie Boogie, while he was still weak from being revived, Maleficent teleported the two away leaving Lock, Shock, and Barrel to protect their master and take on Vanitas, though Maleficent gave them a little help in the form of a giant Heartless monster. Vanitas destroyed the Heartless in one shot while Lock, Shock and Barrel retreated.

Against Master Hand Forces

Now that their defenses had been destroyed, Maleficent, Jafar, Tai Lung, Pete, a Shadow Clone of Oogie Boogie (Made by the bag of bugs himself so he could still recover at the base) and Master Xehanort entered the scene. They were immediately attacked by Wario, Gruntilda and her sisters, Bowser, Ganondorf, Kefka, and Kuja. Right off the bat, Tai Lung was able to crush both of Grunty's sisters causing the bag of bones to temporary flee. Bowser fired his cannon at the clone which easily disposed of it. Though Tai Lung and Jafar easily destroyed the cannon, Grunty returned in a huge tank to protect herself and started firing one huge spell. But when Maleficent made Gruntilda drop the spell things got explosive. After watching the tank explode, Wario decided that if he stayed around, he'd end up like Gruntilda and left the battlefield, Bowser joined him shortly after a failed battle with Pete. While all this commotion was going on, Kefka convinced Kuja to join the fray. He did so but was easily disposed of by Jafar. Out of nowhere, Braig entered the battlefield. While he was easily defeated he claimed he was "buying time" and left. Meanwhile Master Xehanort found Princess Peach and absorbed her power. Using her power and the power from the other 6 princesses he was able to summon Kingdom Hearts over the battlefield and tried to absorb its power. Seeing that the ruse was up, Xehanort had Vanitas go and kill Tai Lung.
