The Southern Water Tribe is one of the main supporting brances and divisions of the Water Tribe, a federation of collective independent states in the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise. It is located at the South Pole in the southern division of the Water Tribes; the South, in particular, is ruled by a Council of Elders, who also elect the tribe's chief. Although, the tribe had experienced times of prosperity and freedom, it also experienced times of decline and genocide. Due to its waterbending style, which most of the native water benders were excelled, the tribe thrived in its unique culture, although being repulsed by the invasions of the expansionist Fire Nation, which sought to increase its influence in the region. The tribe also appears as the homeland of the heroic warriors Katara and Sokka, who joined the Avatar Aang on a journey to prevent the Fire Nation from invading their lands. It also appears in the second Heroes vs. Villains as one of the main supporting divisions on the side of good.
