The Lich is one of the primary antagonists of the Cartoon Networks' animated series Adventure Time. A primordial ancient being and the manifestation of "Death" himself bent on destroying existence itself, the Lich is arguably one of the most menacing villains to date. He appears as one of Chernabog's Acolytes in the third Disney vs. Non-Disney Villains war and he's a main player in the second Cartoon Villains War.

Vs Aku[]
Thousands of eons ago, before humanity or even time itself existed, monsters, demons, and all manner of eldritch creatures ruled the cosmos. One of the oldest and most powerful of them all was the spirit of destruction and death known only as the Lich, a being of pure darkness who ruled over all the others with an iron fist. However, an upstart demon known as Aku chose to rebel against the Lich and usurp his power for himself. Acting on his intentions, Aku launched an attack on the Lich’s lair, where the creature was plotting with his acolytes (two chaotic spirits known as Mirage and Bill Cipher), and openly challenged him. The Lich accepted Aku’s challenge, and the two dueled for supremacy. Although Aku’s power was great, it was no match for the Lich, who quickly gained the upper hand and severely damaged Aku’s body. However, as the two were dueling, Bill Cipher’s treacherous nature began to manifest, as the acolyte saw an opportunity to betray his master and seize power for himself. As the Lich prepared to finsh Aku off, Bill attacked from behind, briefly paralyzing him with magic. Although the Lich was only stunned for a moment, that was long enough for Aku, who completely obliterated the Lich’s body with several thrown fireballs. Impressed, Mirage decided to join Bill, as the two turned on Aku, double-teaming him before he even had the chance to celebrate his victory. The two bombarded Aku with blasts of magic, seemingly destroying him. Recognizing that the Lich was so powerful that the destruction of his body would only be a temporary solution, Bill convinced Mirage to combine their powers and cast a spell that would keep the Lich from ever returning, as long as they were alive to maintain the spell. Now free to do as they pleased, the two went their separate ways. Unbeknownst to them, a piece of Aku's essence survived, and, after floating in space for several hundred eons, landed on Earth.
Freed[]
As it turns out, Toffee’s plan was successful, as with both Mirage and Bill Cipher destroyed, their spell is undone, and an old evil believed to long destroyed is able to make his return. It seems that the true war has only just begun.
Cartoon Villains War - Part Two[]
Vs The Abracadaver[]
Having just returned from the dead, the Lich explores the new world he has found himself in. Still weakened from his eons-long slumber, the Lich wanders into a graveyard, and begins feeding on the souls of the dead to restore his lost strength. However, in the process, the undead sorcerer Abracadaver is accidentally resurrected. Can Abracadaver overpower the world’s oldest evil, or is he merely an opportunity for the Lich to reestablish his power?
Sending a message[]
Securing his lair, the Lich casts a spell, which sends out a message to all his followers, letting them know that the time has come to make their move. Meanwhile, the Enchantress is alerted to the spell that the Lich sent out, and realizes that the Lich has returned. The Lich is visited by one of his secret acolytes, the Enchantress.
Preparing his army[]
The Lich is informed by Enchantress of the growing discord between Skeletor’s allies, and begins preparing to make his move, starting by raising up a new breed of undead soldiers to aid him…

Vs Zeus and other gods[]
There has been speculation that Hades would rule over Mount Olympus on the day when all the planets align. Of course the ruler of the underworld was interested in the throne, and the day was coming soon, however the Gods of Olympus were vast and powerful, so he couldn't do the job alone. Traveling to a cherry blossom tree, he immediatly destroys it with his flames, freeing the corpse of a man in a green robe. Thus, the god of death was free, albiet under Hades' control. Thanatos wasn't willing to help out the god so easily though, so a deal was made. If Hades would rule over Olympus, then he would rule over the underworld. "Yes! It's a deal then!".Eager to rule over the souls of the River Styx, Thanatos takes control of a large beast, and travels to Mount Olympus, with his greatest rival, the god of plants, watching over the nearby vally and ordering two other gods, Discord and Zeus, to destroy his body. The King of all gods's ego gets the better of him however, and he ends up being reduced to nothing but dust by the god's smog. Thie other two gods don't go easy on him however, as Arbutus cuts off his hand, and the god of mischief causes the beast to beast to implode, only leaving it's hand to run off, and meet back with his master.
Going Back to Hades[]
Arriving from the Failure of capturing Mt. Olympus, The God of Death finds the God of The Underworld fuming with anger for immediately rushing in, leaving hundreds of gods after them. Hades does have a plan to correct this risky oversight however.
Meeting the Fates[]
After the failure to take Olympus, Thanatos has a discussion with the fates for a potential future where Olympus falls under Hades' rule, and hears of a potential ally and enemy to him. Preparing for the war, Thanatos sends his soul to the mortal realm to await a capture, which is rather easily found by a Russian Cultist.
The Loss of Gods[]
Thanatos makes a brief appearance in Round 8, serving as Archive Footage to show him killing Zeus and sparking a war between Hades and the other gods.
Villains Battles[]
Pre-War:Vs XXL and King Picolo[]
While trying to gather an army for Maleficent, the Lich ends up getting attacked by XXI and King Piccolo, who have been ordered by Chernabog to take down every ally of Maleficent's. As the Lich easily deals with one of King Piccolo's children, the evil Namekian decides to take him down. When the necromacer summons a monster as King Piccolo decides to destroy it, XXI makes him move.
Animated Villains War[]
Vs Toffee[]
Ludo, Prince of the Avarius, performs a ritual to summon Bill Cipher, in order for the one-eyed demon to help him figure out what to do with his new magic wand. Bill casts a spell, activates the wand and causes Toffee, an old Septarsian ally, to possess Ludo's body. Toffee (or Ludo) now has the mission to eliminate Bill's biggest rival, an evil spirit known as The Lich.
A new body[]
Meanwhile, a possessed snail plans its next victim. Ratcliffe appears in an old beggar's cave and interrogates him, not getting many answers about the whereabouts of the Queen's Castle.
Vs Maleficent[]
Later, a beggar arrives on the mountain and demands to talk to Maleficent. Unfortunately for him, she wasn't in a very good mood. After taking out his hatred on him, Maleficent realizes that whoever was in his castle was not someone favorable.
Teaming with Aku[]
After escaping from the certain death at Maleficent hands, it is revealed to us where the Lich ended up:near to Aku. He seems to like it.
Hiring someone[]
The Lich abandons his former appearance and hires one of his henchmen from Ooo for a mission.
Vs Horned King[]
The Horned King thought he would carry out his ritual and rule the world. But, another undead sorcerer appears to stop the king's plans.
Plans for Him[]
Aku and Abracadaver are taking care of the Underworld in Him's absence. That's when they are surprised by the presence of the Lich, who has a proposal for them.Him returns to the underworld and then, Him, Aku, Abracadaver and the Lich conjure a monster that will be able to fight any threat to the place.
Vs The Sorcerer[]
The Sorcerer practices a spell to absorb cosmic powers. However, Bill Cipher's longtime nemesis, The Lich, meddles in his plans. Could this be one of them's lucky day?

Vs Keldor[]
Hord Prime realizes that his forces are not enough to resist Keldor and his ally. He orders the Fairy Godmother to free the ancient evil Lich so that he can help them kill Keldor before he finds Koshchei. The reborn Lich agreed to help Prime in exchange for the fact that he would rule the universe instead of him, Hord lied that he agreed to give up his place as ruler, as he then decides to get rid of the Lich.

Vs Hades[]
Hades decided to free another demon named Lich to help him to beat Aku and his allies, but the Lich isn't going to let himself be controlled by The God that trapped him before,so he challenges Hades into a battle for his freedom.Hades accepts as he prepares to shoot a fireball at Lich.However,Lich anticipated that and created a powerfull spell to defend himself.Then Hades shoots a lot more fireballs into the creatures,which caused of Lich losing most of his skin.Seeing Lich vulnerable,Hades decided to become giant as Lich.However,Lich managed to shoot a powerfull spell into Hades head,causing The God to have a little headache.This was proven to be a wrong move,as he felt right into Hades trap.The Lich was teleported back into his cell on Earth,leaving Hades to realise that he might have the strenght to defeat Aku.
Freed by Skeletor[]
Skeletor saw Lich trapped, so he freed the demon with one condition...to become an eternal slave for him.As much as he did not wanted to,Lich had to agree with the offer.
