The Amazons are prominent people appearing in Greek mythology, portrayed in a number of ancient epic poems, such like the Labors of Heracles. Courageous and fiercely independent, the Amazons were female warriors and hunters, known for the physical agility, strength, archery, riding, and the arts of war. Their society was closed to men and they raised only their daughters and returned their sons to their fathers, with whom they would only socialize briefly in order to reproduce. Led by a powerful Queen, the Amazons are known to live in Themiscyra, the capital at the banks of the Thermodon river in the region of Pontus, north-east of Anatolia.
Consequently, the Amazons appear in various film adaptations and television series, including Disney's television series Hercules. Led by Queen Hippolyte, the Amazons follow their queen without question. Chief among the Amazons was Queen Hippolyte's daughter, Tempest, who befriended the young Hercules during his time at the Prometheus Academy.
The Amazons also appear in the second Disney Heroes vs. Villains as among the chief dignitaries of the Royal Council.
